Welcome

Who says we have to suffer...to live a healthy happy vibrant life?

Red wine and dark chocolate... might seem decadent...but these guilty pleasures also might help us live longer...and healthier lives. Red wine and dark chocolate definitely improve an evening..but they also contain resveratrol..which lowers blood sugar. Red wine is a great source of catechins..which boost protective HDL cholesterol. Green tea? Protects your brain..helps you live longer..and soothes your spirit.

Food for Thought, the blog, is about living the good life...a life we create with our thoughts and our choices...and having fun the whole while!

I say lets make the thoughts good ones..and let the choices be healthy...exciting...and delicious! Bon Appetit!

Apples and Cinnamon...Delicious and So Healthy!

Apples..who doesn't love a crisp juicy apple in summer? Eating one before each meal is a popular approach for weight loss. They are loaded with antioxidants and lots of fiber, Just one apple with its skin contains 20 percent of the recommended daily fiber intake. Studies have linked eating apples to lower cholesterol, weight loss and a dramatically reduced risk of several kinds of cancer, heart disease, asthma, type 2 diabetes and stroke. Apples even boost levels of the memory hormone acetylcholine...
Sprinkle on some cinnamon... also loaded with antioxidants, because half a teaspoon a day of the fragrant spice lowers blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, and in healthy people too. Cinnamon brings down levels of total cholesterol, drops triglycerides and reduces LDL cholesterol.

I get organic apples brought right to my door by MileHigh Organics. If you live along the front range of Colorado they'll bring you yummy food each week too!

Just go to this link.

Not one of my Colorado neighbors? Go to your farmers market, sign up for a CSA at Local Harvest.org or visit the supermarket to pick up your favorite apples..and let the health benefits begin!

Want a flat tummy? Fiber is your friend

Complex carbohydrates help you get and stay slim, without dieting. Unlike the ubiquitous simple carbs –yes I’m talking about cake, chips and cookies -- fruits, vegetables and whole grains are naturally loaded with fiber, a nutrient that supports better digestion and elimination, reduces bloat, and has even been shown to support a healthier body weight in numerous studies.

Nutrition guidelines recommend women get 25 to 35 grams of fiber a day but surveys show most women fall short of that by about 60-70%.  One big plus...high fiber foods help you eat less calories but still feel full.

Go for whole foods fiber sources like oatmeal, apples and spinach, Skip the bars and supplements. Remember that study that found that eating apples lowers cholesterol? It is because of the fiber. Try this...the next time you are tempted to grab some of chips, or something sweet, grab a whole apple instead. I promise you won’t be hungry afterward.

An Apple a Day May Keep Heart Disease Away!

Amazing news was presented this week at the Experimental Biology Meeting in Washington D.C. Older women who consumed apples everyday were found to have an average of 23% reduced LDL cholesterol levels within six months and a 4% increase in HDL cholesterol.
The scientists came away with the impression that apples are a miracle fruit.  Its no miracle...pectin and polyphenols, two substances found in apples, enhance lipid metabolism and reduce the production of molecules that cause inflammation.
160 females aged 45-65 years were randomly selected to receive either 75 grams of dried apples daily or dried prunes daily for a whole year. Their blood was examined in a laboratory at months 3, 6 and 12.
Incredible changes occurred in the apple-eating women. Not only did their cholesterol levels improve, they also had reduced levels of lipid peroxidation, a marker of oxidative stress, and they had reduced levels of the inflammatory molecule C- Reactive protein.

It all adds up to less heart risk....

And the icing on the cake? Even though eating the apples added 240 extra calories to their day...the women did not gain weight..they lost an average of 3.3 pounds. Pectin, which makes you feel full..may be a factor in the weight loss.

A Garden of Eden...for Your Skin.

When I say Apple...do you think computers? Well forget that... be thinking ageless skin. Turns out the apple does more than keep the doctor away. It can turn back the hands of time and leave you looking younger...
Yes eating apples can be extremely beneficial to one’s health. The fruit is rich in fiber and vitamin C. Apples are also packed with antioxidants and flavonoids, which can help prevent disease. But...one of the hottest trends in skin rejuvenation uses apple stem cells culled from a rare Swiss apple known for its longevity. The Uttwiler Spatlauber apple is a nearly extinct variety found only in Switzerland. Apples and even bark from this tree have an amazing ability to heal themselves if they are scraped or punctured. Once picked, the apples last for months longer than other varieties. Because of this, this apple was studied, and the source of the anti-aging and regenerative properties was found in its stem cells. Since then, these endangered apples have been cultivated, and their stem cells have been extracted for cosmetic use. Studies have shown that they help protect and repair human stem cells, which is incredible.
But it’s not just the Swiss apple stem cells that make apple a great skincare solution. No matter from where the apple is plucked, the fruity flesh is filled with nourishing ingredients. Apples contain natural exfoliants that remove dead skin cells, and they also contain components that protect the skin from harmful UV rays, prevent cell and tissue damage, and fight wrinkles and aging. Additionally, the abundance of alpha hydroxy acids, collagen, elastin, and vitamins A, B, and C aid in balancing the pH levels in the skin.
Things to try...
